In Varanasi the gold is a real thread. A weaver pulls it through the ground cloth by hand and the pattern is counted, not printed, which is why two lengths off the same loom never match. We took four of its oldest motifs and put them on cotton at the size they deserve.

The kalga is the curled mango. The bel is the vine that runs the border. The jaal is the net that fills everything else. Kantha is the running stitch that comes after, and it is the part that refuses to be neat.
