In Mithila the painting went on the walls of the house, and it was done by women, and it was done for weddings and births rather than for sale. The rule that matters is that no space is left empty. Every gap gets a fish, a bird, a flower, a row of dots.

Double outlines first, in black. Then the filling: hatching, rings, dots, until the shape holds still. Colour goes in last and only in some places, which is why the ones left bare read as loud as the ones filled.
